Gail Tsukiyama is the author of seven novels. She has won many awards and was one of nine fiction authors chosen to appear during the first Library of Congress National Book Festival. Last year Gail was one of our honored authors, and now she has generously agreed to return to lead a pop-up book club.

Gail was born in San Francisco to a Japanese father and a Chinese mother. Her multicultural upbringing is reflected in the stories she has been writing since 1991, when her first novel, Women of the Silk, became an unexpected bestseller. For our pop-up book club Gail has chosen The Street of a Thousand Blossoms, set in Tokyo in 1939. Of the book, Berkeley’s own Michael Chabon says “Gail Tsukiyama is a writer of astonishing grace, delicacy, and feeling. Her lyric precision serves not only to leave the reader breathless but to illuminate human suffering and redemption with clarity and power.”

Read The Street of a Thousand Blossoms on your own and then come to the Berkeley home of author Terry Shames for our pop-up book club to discuss the book with Ms. Tsukiyama. There will be sweet treats, wine, coffee, and lots of great conversation.

This event will take place on Wednesday,
June 25th from 7 – 9 pm.
