Chef Cal Peternell grew up on a small farm in New Jersey, then took a painterly journey—graduating with an BFA from New York’s School of Visual Arts, then moving with his wife to Lucca, Italy to pursue their art careers. He returned to the US and started working at Bix Restaurant in San Francisco, eventually joining Chez Panisse in 1995. He’s now one of the downstairs chefs cooking half of the year and developing new menus the other half. When his oldest son was leaving for college, Peternell wrote Twelve Recipes, an introduction to the kitchen with lessons in how to cook and eat well. Peternell lives in Berkeley.
